Protection with safety switch in Ex industrial environments

GSM-R technology in brief

By the end of the last century, more than 35 different systems were used for railway communications in Europe. This was, of course, not the best way to ensure operations, as the number of rail passengers continued to increase.

Precautionary measures are important in demanding industrial environments. With low safety, much is at stake. Ex-rated safety switches make the working environment safer by enabling switching off and isolation in explosive atmospheres, thereby helping to prevent accidents. Safety switches are a common device installed in industrial settings to prevent accidental or unauthorized start-up of the electrical installation, typically when work is to be carried out on part of a plant. The switch is intended to protect both the industrial environment and everyone working in the area. It is therefore important to select the correct switch from the outset.

Safety switches Ex/EMC for demanding environments

Suitable for installation of variable-speed motors to protect against electromagnetic radiation. The switch is stainless steel (acid-resistant, 316L) and is 3-pole with auxiliary contacts.

With correctly selected cable glands, these safety switches meet the requirements for EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility).

Plastic safety switches

No one else can operate the switch without your knowledge. The safety switch can easily be locked using up to three padlocks so that start-up cannot occur until all locks have been removed.

The ATEX explosion protection marking has the following meaning:

Toggle switches

The switch is intended for use in zones 1, 2, 21 and 22. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor installations, particularly well suited for chemical industries and offshore facilities. The toggle switch button is easy to operate, even with work gloves, and its luminescent label makes it visible in the dark. The protective collar also prevents accidental operation.

Manual motor protection switches

Manual motor protection switch with start function, phase-failure protection, and thermal and electromagnetic trip. The motor protection switch is available in various versions, from 0.1 to 25 A. Operating status is always indicated by the position of the knob. The motor protection switch can only be started manually on the unit.

The control switch supports up to 6 contacts and 2–5 switching positions. This makes virtually all applications in modern control technology possible. The contacts are protected against contact with each other and support a conductor cross-section of up to 6 mm for connecting single- or multi-strand conductors. The control switch’s rated current at 500 V is 16 A.
