ATEX in Marine Environments
In marine industrial environments—such as ships, offshore facilities, and port installations—flammable gases, vapors, and dust particles are often present, which can create explosive atmospheres. To protect people, equipment, and operations, strict compliance with ATEX directives is required.
What does ATEX mean in a marine context?
ATEX is the EU regulatory framework for equipment and work environments in explosive atmospheres. In marine environments, this includes, for example, engine rooms, tank facilities, cargo holds, and other zones where an explosive atmosphere may occur.
These areas are classified into different zones—Zone 0, 1, or 2—depending on the likelihood of an explosive mixture being present.
