GSM-R is available on all state-owned railway tracks, so the group calling function can be used anywhere there are railway tracks. To activate group calling, the SIM card must be configured for one or more groups, i.e., two-way radio channels where you can talk with your group.
Group calling has always been available in the GSM-R network, but not many people use this function. In other words, there is a ready-made two-way radio network in GSM-R that few take advantage of.
Vallsta Skogsmaskiner was founded in 1974 and is based in Vallsta. The company manages the entire growth chain, from site preparation to harvesting. Most assignments are carried out in the forests around the municipalities of Bollnäs and Ljusdal and the surrounding area. Andreas Andersson operates a harvester and spends most of his working hours far from the nearest buildings.
Since the NMT network was decommissioned, there have been many problems. The forwarder and the harvester could not communicate. Making calls sometimes worked—if you switched off the machine. For lone workers, the ability to communicate is especially important. The work naturally becomes less complicated and more efficient when it can be coordinated with the office and colleagues, but the most important aspect is still safety.
We want to change that and have therefore, together with Peltor, developed Peltor’s ear defenders WS ProTac XPI so that they work with the PTT function for group calling. Of course, it is possible to use only the phone, but with Peltor’s ear defenders, use becomes much easier. Railway emergency call = REC call is also a group call, but of the highest priority, warning when there is danger. A Railway emergency call “opens up” all GSM-R phones in the area and alerts with a powerful warning signal in the phone, and the signal is also automatically heard in the Peltor headset.
