Bista Mekan – Safe and efficient lighting in painting environments

Bista Mekan is a company with extensive expertise in steel structures, steel halls, and steel vehicle interiors. To handle surface treatment internally, they have long had their own spray painting booth on their premises. Over time, however, safety requirements had changed – a fact that became evident when the fire inspection recently conducted an audit.

The Challenge

During the inspection, it was determined that the luminaires in the spray painting booth were not Ex-approved, which posed a potential safety risk. Furthermore, a classification plan was missing to confirm that the area did not require Ex-rated equipment.

Bista Mekan contacted Malux for guidance on how to handle the situation.

Our solution

The first step was to clarify the applicable zone classification. Malux recommended that Bista Mekan establish a classification plan, which is a fundamental prerequisite for selecting the correct type of equipment according to the ATEX directive.

Subsequently, Malux conducted a site visit to measure both the premises and the existing light intensity in the spray painting booth, in order to provide the right recommendation.

Based on the findings, Malux presented two alternatives with Ex-approved luminaires, adapted for use in painting environments. Both alternatives offered:

Better and more even light distribution
Higher light intensity
Fewer luminaires than before, thanks to more efficient technology
Easy cleaning and maintenance
Luminaires designed to withstand the stresses of an environment where paint and solvents are present
