How Communication Was Modernized at a Swedish Refinery

Reliable Communication

In an industrial environment such as a refinery, safety and reliable communication are crucial—especially in ATEX-classified zones where equipment must be approved for use in explosive atmospheres. To meet these requirements, Malux, together with its partner i.safe MOBILE, has replaced older DECT phones with modern, Ex-classified mobile phones and tablets that combine robustness with smart functionality.

For simpler communication and applications, the IS120.1 was selected, a robust Ex-classified phone with basic functionality. In cases where more advanced features were required—for example, during inspections, maintenance, or fieldwork—the IS530.1 model has been used, which can also be supplemented with a thermal camera for real-time visual inspection.

When the need for high-resolution imagery has been particularly important, for example for documentation or remote support, the IS540.1 model was chosen—an ATEX-certified smartphone equipped with a powerful 48MP camera. In addition, the IS940.1 tablet has been used in certain parts of the operation where larger screen format and user-friendliness have been essential.

The Result

The result is a more mobile and flexible working method that both improves the work environment and increases efficiency in zone-classified areas—without compromising safety.
