Safer Tunnel Passage Between Sweden and Denmark

The lighting system in the Øresund Tunnel was upgraded in 2018 with luminaires that guide road users to exits in emergency situations.

Emergency Lighting

The Øresund Connection is a 15.9 km route between Malmö and Copenhagen consisting of a tunnel, a bridge, and an artificial island. The bridge extends from Sweden and the tunnel from Denmark. The Øresund Consortium, which manages the connection, is committed to ensuring safe passage between the countries. Therefore, the existing lighting was upgraded with green emergency luminaires from Malux.
Emergency lighting can be of great importance for road user safety. In an enclosed environment such as a tunnel, incidents such as fire, power outages, or other accidents can develop into situations where people must be able to quickly exit to the open air to avoid injury.

It is important that road users are provided with the information they need to reach a safe location, and therefore the emergency lighting in the Øresund Tunnel has been supplemented with green emergency lighting at the emergency exit routes. The luminaires are manufactured to withstand the aggressive and harsh environment found in tunnels and guide users to exits, making it easier for road users to evacuate the tunnel on foot in an emergency situation.
