Siemens Mobility – A Future-Proof GSM-R Solution for Cab Radio

In March 2020, Siemens Mobility in Australia contacted us with a clear objective: to modernize a critical component of their onboard communication system. They required a complete solution consisting of handheld GSM-R phones, a vehicle cradle with external antenna, and seamless integration with their existing Cab Radio system.

Following a brief technical discussion, an NDA was signed later that month, enabling the project to commence.

The Challenge

As development progressed, the project parameters changed. The customer had Sagem TiGR350 and we already had a ready replacement solution for SED phones. However, the end customer then selected a different GSM-R manufacturer, AWT, which meant that the entire solution needed to be developed and redesigned from the ground up.

The new solution needed to:

  • Be fully adapted to the OPH-210R phone model
  • Meet very high requirements for safety and operational reliability
  • Enable seamless transition between fixed mounting in the driver’s cab and handheld use outside the cab
  • Integrate with the Cab Radio system without interference or signal loss
Our Solution
Following long-term collaboration with Siemens Mobility and AWT, we developed two new Malux products:

1. CH3000 Communication & charger unit

A robust and secure switching unit that manages the transition between fixed installation in the cab and handheld use. When the driver leaves the cab and takes the phone, ongoing calls are automatically transferred without interruption.

2. Cradle for OPH-210R

A newly developed phone cradle, specifically designed for the OPH-210R. It meets high requirements for safety, vibration, and durability performance in railway environments, while offering improved functionality and user experience compared to previous solutions.

In September 2023, Siemens ordered a pilot series (POC) to verify the solution. Following successful testing, the final order was placed in November 2023.

Results

Despite pandemic-related challenges and several technical adjustments, the entire delivery was completed in October 2024 – a total of 750 units.

In spring 2025, Siemens placed an additional order for 550 units.

In total, over 1,300 units have been delivered within one year.

The new solution replaces the previous installation and provides Siemens Mobility with a more reliable, flexible, and future-proof communication solution for their Australian vehicle fleet.
