IP rating

IP rating / enclosure rating (IEC 60529) is a classification of the enclosure of electrical equipment, with regard to how well the equipment is protected against water, dust, ingress of solid objects, and contact.

In English: IP code, International Protection Marking, or sometimes Ingress Protection rating

Minimum requirements are specified, among others, by electrical safety regulations and in product standards for electrical safety and explosion protection. Enclosure requirements are also imposed on products with high demands on reliability and where ingress of dust can cause malfunctions.

Enclosure testing is normally performed according to the global standard IEC 60529 or its European equivalent EN 60529, which has been adopted as the Swedish standard SS EN 60529.
